Peace Campers have been busy making peace with the earth and with others these weeks!

We hope you had fun and learned more about peace with yourself, peace with the earth, and peace with others this month. See the video below for a final week of activities about peace, and then check out the bottom of this post for information about the celebration tonight!

Journal Reflection/Questions:

• Name all the different conflicts you’ve had with other people. Practice writing I-statements for these conflicts. 
• Write or draw how conflict makes you feel. 
• Practice naming your feelings. You can print this page or just read through each of the sentences and tell someone at home how you would feel in each situation. 
• Click here to complete the scenarios in the video. Practice saying I statements for those scenarios. Don’t forget to use the Steps for Solving Conflict to help you!

Feathers and Fools by Mem Fox 
Listen to the story, and think about these questions. 

• Why are the peacocks fearful? 
• What would you say to the first peacock to help him understand tolerance of others who are different from you? Make sure to think about what would cause the peacock to think differently. How would this prevent others from becoming fearful and how would that change the outcome to the story?

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
Listen to the story, and think about these questions. 

• What is one benefit of getting along with others? 
• Can you tell what a person is like just by looking at them? Do you need to visit with them first? 
• Everyone is different, but how are we all the same too? 
• Check out this website for a message from the author, Derek Munson and some activity ideas.

Nature Scavenger Hunt:
Print or use this page to complete the nature scavenger hunt. Take this with you to the creek, the garden, or find items in your backyard! Complete individually or with your family. Send us a picture with your treasures!

Listen to the song This Pretty Planet by Tom Chapin, make up motions for the song. Share the song with someone. Listen here to Tom Chapin talk about writing the song. In your journal write what you think the song means.

Share pictures of whatever you do by sending them to [email protected]. We will post them on this site next week so you can see what all your friends are doing to celebrate peace.        

Bring your decorated board back to the Salford Church Building on Saturday, July 11 when you come to plant flowers.
If you didn't get a chance to get a board, you can still get one! Email your request and we'll make sure you get what you need.

• How can you teach others that taking care of the earth is important?

• Name something that you think is beautiful. What would you do to make it more beautiful? 
• Is there a right or wrong way to make the world more beautiful? 
• What will you do to make the earth more beautiful? 

Water Dance by Thomas Locker

• Which was your favorite riddle from the story? 
• In your journal make up your own riddle about something from creation, and see if you family and friends can guess the answer!

Families across our community are participating in the Peace Camp Challenge and sending in photos! Keep emailing photos from your Peace Camp activities and the Peace Camp Challenge to [email protected], and we'll post them here and on Facebook.

What brings you peace? Some campers read the bible. One says, "I often read in my room or my secret hideout." Another says, "I enjoy the stories about Moses."Peace is a walk in the woods with Sophie the dog! One peace camper builds and creates with legos to help him find peace. Another drinks water when she is upset and working to calm her body down. Another peace camper says "Skipping rocks at the creek is peace for me."

The first boards for our community art project were turned in today! Are you working on your artwork? We can't wait to see what you make and put them all together.
Bring them on Saturday, July 11 when you come to plant flowers. If you don't have boards yet and you want to participate, email [email protected].

First step: pick up your Peace Camp kit with your journal, mirror, community art project supplies, and more at Salford Mennonite Church sometime today or tomorrow! If you registered for Peace Camp there is a bag waiting for you at the Pastors' Office Entrance (if you're standing at the carport, it's to your right, not under the carport). If you didn't register - there are still plenty of activities for you to do without the kit.

• Decorate your peace camp journal with words, pictures, and designs that represent who you are and what makes you unique. 
• Look in the mirror that you received in your camp materials. As you look into it, draw a self-portrait in your journal. You are a treasure, a gift from God to your family and our whole community. Peace begins with you!
• Decorate your mirror in a way that will remind you, when you look at it, of your unique God-given gifts and how peace begins with you. 

 

• Reflect on the question: What does peace mean to you? What does it feel like? Look like? Taste like? Smell like? Sound like? Write or draw your reflections.
• Reflect on the question: How do you lose peace? What breaks your heart and pulls your spirit down? What do you usually fight about? When have you felt hurt and spread that to others? Write or draw your reflections.

• "I Am From" Poem: Print this page and write your own poem. Share it with a friend!
• Playlist: Practice peace in your body as you listen and breathe along to this song: Breathing In, Breathing Out. The full album of prayers for children from different faiths is available here (YouTube) and here (Spotify).
• Share pictures of whatever you do by sending them to [email protected]. We will post them on this site next week so you can see what all your friends are doing to celebrate peace.

• What do you like about yourself? 
• What did the girl think when people said mean things about her? Have you ever had an experience like that, or do you know someone who has? 
• The story says, “nothing in this world can change what is deep inside.” What do you think that means? 

The Peace Book by Todd Parr

• What example of peace did you like the most?
• What is something you have done to build peace? 
• What would you like to do this summer to help build peace? 

Its Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr 

• What do you think about when you hear the word "different/differences?" What about the word "diversity?"
• Diversity means being made up of a lot of different kinds of people - different ideas, different experiences, different colors of skin, sizes, ages. 
• Think of a time where you felt different - at school, at church, in your family or with friends. Imagine that you get to add a page to Todd Parr’s book. In your journal, write down a way you sometimes really feel different. Start your sentence, “It's OK to _____.” And then draw a picture. 
• Why is it important to have different kinds of people in a community, like your school or church? What would happen if everyone was the same, and had the same ideas or felt the same way? 
• What advice would you give to a friend or a classmate who was feeling different?
