Using Your Gifts at Salford

The Salford Mennonite Congregation exists because people, inspired by God's Spirit, are joining in with what God is doing in the congregation and community. Here are some of the many ways we live that mission. Speak with a pastor to discover where your passions and abilities align with this active community. To begin receiving the weekly newsletter, contact the church office.

Worship and Music

The Worship Ministry Team and the pastors guide the worship life of the congregation, with many people of all ages and skill levels contributing: playing instruments or leading music, reading scripture, offering prayers, leading worship, arranging flowers, creating worship art, singing in the choir, preaching, and more. Children and youth receive the offering.

Children and Youth

Teams of adults walk with Salford's children in many ways: sponsor teams, led by the associate pastor for youth, teach junior and senior high and join them in activities. Other adults serve as mentors or hosts for youth group. Sunday school teachers, helpers, subs, and singing leaders are coordinated by the Director of Children's Faith Formation to teach Sunday school each week for kids age 2 to 5th grade and to lead Peace Camp. Faith Formation Nights are monthly meals and activities for first grade and up as well as adults. A nursery ministry team and dozens of volunteers ensure the littlest are cared for during worship, and the Child and Youth Safety Ministry Team ensures best practices for safety.

Spiritual Life

The Spiritual Discernment Advisory Council supports the pastors in matters of spiritual growth and discernment for the congregation, such as discerning our practices around communion. The Prayer Ministry Team facilitates communal prayer opportunities and the Prayer Labyrinth. Table fellowships are short-term small groups where we gather in homes for a meal liturgy. And worship, justice, faith formation, and service are also part of our spiritual life.

Leadership and Visioning

Salford is led by a Board with members nominated and affirmed by the congregation. The Board directs the pastors and staff as they guide the daily life of the congregation. New ministry teams grow out of the passion and vision of members of the congregation.

Justice and Peace

Salford's Justice and Peace Ministry Team partners with organizations throughout the community, heeding God's call to peace through just relationships with one another and the earth. Some of their work includes the Witting Tree Ceremony each November to honor veterans who have died by suicide and the cost of war, Gardening for Peace, and other occasional speakers and events. Salford's Coordinators of Justice Initiatives lead teams in the congregation working for racial justice and right relationships with the land and its original inhabitants.

Supportive Presence

The Salford Congregation supports one another. The Pastoral Visitors regularly visit and care for the elders and most isolated in the congregation, offering the gift of presence. The Meal Ministry Team coordinates meals for those experiencing major life events, and the Kitchen Team and Clean Up Crew staff the kitchen for fellowship meals. Welcomers are present in the foyer on Sunday mornings to welcome visitors and help them find the information they need. Trustees and other volunteers care for the grounds and mow the lawns. And lots of caring happens informally as folks reach out in love to those around them.

Beyond the Congregation

Salford members work together to make an impact beyond the congregation. The Salford/Advent Garden is a collaboration with Advent Lutheran Church. Salford organizes volunteer opportunities in the community, and many members volunteer regularly individually as well: through the Mennonite Central Committee Material Resource, Center, Care and Share, and by volunteering or serving on boards of local and international organizations.
