This course will cover...
This course is designed as an introduction to basic production techniques for a wide variety of topics from soil management, fruit and vegetable production, food preservation and raising poultry and small livestock. As you consider your options for using your property, learn what is involved and the resources available to help.
Who should come:
The “Living on a Few Acres” program is designed to provide individuals interested in beginning or improving upon an existing, small-scale agricultural operation. Whether your intent is to produce food for your family or seek some income from your property, this series of seminars has something to offer.
What to expect:
- An overview of basic production topics.
- An introduction to the resources and support available for new producers.
· Instruction from experts from Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Living On a Few Acres (LOFA) Agenda
3/2- Introduction to Soils, Amendments and Compost
This session will cover basic soil management, soil testing, soil improvements such as lime, fertilizer, compost, manure and cover crops.
3/9-Growing Fruits and Vegetables
What, when and how to plant different crops, how to care for them and when and how to harvest.
3/16-Food Preservation
How to safely enjoy the products from your garden all year round.
3/23- Raising Poultry and Small Livestock
Have an interest in raising chickens, sheep and goats on your few acres? Come hear what it takes.
