Mennonite Disaster Service
Each year Salford sends one or more teams of skilled and non-skilled volunteer workers to a Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) work locations to respond to the needs of "neighbors" in time of disaster. We endeavor, in the spirit of Christian love, to follow Christ's example by giving time, talents, and energies to help relieve suffering caused by disasters. We understand the ministries of listening, cleanup, repair, reconstruction to be examples of "the cup of cold water" given to those in need. MDS focuses on helping the most vulnerable: the elderly, the handicapped, single parents, the unemployed, the uninsured and the underinsured. Salford work teams have been active in responding to the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina and to damage caused by other natural disasters such as fire, tornado, hurricane, and flooding. These trips are a high moment of fellowship, service, and being the “hands and feet of Christ” for those who participate. MDS trips are open to anyone interested in participating.
On February 5th through the 12th, 2011, 20 members of Salford Mennonite Church went to Pass Christian, Mississippi to participate in the continuing Mennonite Disaster Service response to hurricane Katrina. This is one example of our efforts to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a hurting world. Please click on this link to see a slide show of their efforts in the name of Christ.
